Position Overview

Supabase, the leading Postgres development platform, is seeking a Software Engineer to own and evolve the Supabase Terraform provider — a critical piece of our developer experience and infrastructure automation strategy. In this role you’ll be responsible for the reliability, performance, and developer ergonomics of our Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) surface, working across product, platform, and community teams to ensure customers can provision and manage Supabase services declaratively and safely.

This is a hands-on engineering role that blends API and platform integration, SDK/provider design, and open-source maintenance. You will work primarily in Go, drive architectural improvements in the provider codebase, implement robust acceptance testing and CI, and help define the roadmap for IaC support across Supabase services. Success in this role requires a strong pragmatic engineering mindset, deep familiarity with Terraform provider development patterns, and a commitment to creating clear, well-tested interfaces for developers and operators.

Key Responsibilities

Provider Development & Maintenance

  • Own the Supabase Terraform provider codebase: design, implement, and maintain resources and data sources that map Supabase services (e.g., Postgres databases, auth, storage, realtime) to Terraform constructs.
  • Write idiomatic Go code using the Terraform Plugin SDK: manage schemas, CRUD operations, importers, and customized diff/plan behavior where needed.
  • Handle state management, resource lifecycle edge cases, and migration paths for breaking changes while minimizing disruption for users.

Reliability, Testing & CI

  • Design and implement unit tests, acceptance tests, and integration tests for provider functionality; ensure tests run reliably in CI.
  • Build and maintain automated release workflows, versioning practices, and compatibility checks to support a predictable release cadence.
  • Instrument provider operations with logging and metrics to aid debugging and incident response.

Collaboration & Developer Experience

  • Partner with product and backend engineers to model provider resources that reflect user needs and API semantics.
  • Collaborate with docs engineers and technical writers to produce clear examples, guides, and API documentation for IaC users.
  • Engage with the open-source community: triage issues, review PRs, and incorporate community feedback to improve the provider.

Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Propose and drive architectural improvements to the provider, including modular design, code reuse, and abstractions that accelerate future feature work.
  • Evaluate and adopt best practices for API client libraries, rate limiting/retry strategies, and secure credential handling.
  • Produce design documents and RFCs for significant changes, balancing backward compatibility and long-term maintainability.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years professional software engineering experience with significant experience in Go (Golang) for production systems.
  • Proven experience building, maintaining, or contributing to Terraform providers or comparable IaC providers (understanding Terraform resource lifecycle, schema design, and state management).
  • Deep familiarity with the Terraform Plugin SDK and common provider patterns, or equivalent experience translating APIs to declarative resource models.
  • Strong understanding of REST/gRPC APIs and experience building resilient API clients (handling retries, rate limits, pagination, pagination, error handling).
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests, and building reliable CI pipelines that validate provider behavior across environments.
  • Proven ability to debug complex issues across API layers, concurrency, and networking.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience working effectively in a remote, cross-functional environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior maintainership or significant contributions to an open-source Terraform provider (provider for cloud platforms, managed services, or developer platforms).
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL and developer-facing services such as managed databases, authentication, object storage, or realtime messaging.
  • Experience with Terraform Provider SDK v2, Go modules, and Go testing tools; familiarity with acceptance testing frameworks (e.g., Terraform’s acceptance testing or equivalent).
  • Experience designing and documenting stable migration paths for breaking changes and major version upgrades in provider APIs.
  • Comfortable with observability tooling (metrics, logs, traces), and building operational runbooks for open-source projects.
  • Experience working in or with SaaS developer platforms and an appreciation for excellent developer experience and clear documentation.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, remote-friendly position. You will be expected to collaborate synchronously with colleagues across time zones on product planning, engineering design, and community interactions; some flexibility to overlap with team working hours is expected. Compensation and benefits details will be shared during the hiring process.

As part of the role, you will work in an environment that values testing, code review, and continuous improvement. The position includes responsibilities that span code development, release engineering, and community support; candidates should be comfortable balancing feature development with maintenance and support tasks.

Why Join This Role?

Joining Supabase as the engineer responsible for the Terraform provider is an opportunity to shape the way developers and teams provision and manage backend services for modern applications. You will own a core integration point that impacts developer productivity and reliability, and you’ll have direct influence on how infrastructure-as-code works for a fast-growing Postgres-centered platform.

You will work with a talented, distributed engineering team that prioritizes open-source contributions, solid engineering practices, and developer experience. This role offers high ownership, the chance to work across product and platform boundaries, and the ability to make tangible improvements used by thousands of developers worldwide. If you enjoy designing clean abstractions, stabilizing distributed integrations, and engaging with a vibrant developer community, this role is an excellent fit.
