Lead Full Stack Developer – Remote
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Full Stack Developer to take ownership of the evolution and operation of Paired’s e-commerce technology ecosystem. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who goes beyond individual contribution: you will define and own the architecture, design and implementation roadmaps, and day-to-day engineering practices that enable a scalable, secure, and performant shopping experience. You will work closely with product managers, designers, operations, and customer-facing teams to translate business goals into well-architected software solutions.
In this role you will lead a small-to-medium engineering team, mentor engineers across the stack, and establish standards for code quality, observability, deployment, and incident response. You should be comfortable making trade-offs between speed and long-term maintainability, driving cross-functional initiatives (e.g., checkout optimization, personalization, payments integrations), and representing technical direction to non-technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Own the system architecture: Define and evolve the architecture for the e-commerce platform including frontend, backend, data stores, integrations, and infrastructure to support growth and new product features.
- Technical roadmaps: Create and maintain multi-quarter technical roadmaps that align with business priorities and reduce technical debt.
- Standards and best practices: Establish coding standards, design patterns, security practices, and documentation standards across the engineering organization.
Hands-on Development
- Full stack delivery: Contribute to and review code across the stack—implement features, fix complex bugs, and optimize performance where it matters most.
- Scalable services: Design and build resilient, observable backend services (microservices or modular monolith), APIs (REST/GraphQL), and data models to support catalog, cart, checkout, order processing, inventory, and promotions.
- Frontend excellence: Lead the development of customer-facing UI components and single-page applications that deliver high conversion rates and accessible UX.
Team Management & Mentorship
- Coach and grow engineers: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in architecture, code quality, testing, and debugging techniques.
- Hiring & retention: Participate in hiring, interviewing, onboarding, and performance reviews to build a high-performing team.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with product, design, marketing, and operations to prioritize technical work and ensure reliable launches.
Operational Excellence
- Reliability and monitoring: Define SLAs/SLOs, set up observability (logging, metrics, tracing), and lead incident response and post-incident reviews.
- CI/CD & automation: Improve build, test, and deployment pipelines to enable frequent, low-risk releases and efficient rollback procedures.
- Security & compliance: Ensure payment and customer data handling meets security best practices and compliance requirements; drive threat modeling and vulnerability remediation.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant full stack responsibilities and at least 2+ years in a technical lead or team lead role.
- Strong expertise in modern web technologies (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java, or similar for backend; React, Vue, or similar for frontend) and experience building production-grade SPAs.
- Proven track record designing and operating scalable web services and APIs; familiarity with both relational and NoSQL databases.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes or similar).
- Demonstrated experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end), and a commitment to high code quality.
- Strong understanding of web performance optimization, caching strategies, and techniques for high-traffic e-commerce sites.
- Experience integrating payments, third-party APIs (shipping, tax, analytics), and handling transactional workflows reliably.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and lead cross-functional discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with e-commerce platforms or headless commerce architectures (Shopify, Magento, commercetools, or custom solutions).
- Familiarity with event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), and eventual consistency patterns.
- Experience with search and discovery technologies (Elasticsearch, Algolia) and personalization/A-B testing frameworks.
- Exposure to data pipelines, analytics instrumentation, and using data to drive product and performance improvements.
- Prior experience in fast-growing startups or high-growth product teams where setting direction and shipping quickly were critical.
- Technical leadership certifications or formal mentorship/training experience.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, remote position. The role requires close collaboration with distributed teams; therefore, reliable internet connectivity and the ability to participate in periodic cross-timezone meetings are important. Compensation, equity considerations (if applicable), and other benefits will be discussed during the hiring process.
Paired is committed to building an inclusive workplace. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups to apply. Candidates should be prepared to share a portfolio of relevant work or examples of architecture decisions and system designs during the interview process.
