Position Overview

Scadea is seeking a skilled Java Microservices Developer to join a client-facing project on a temporary basis. This role is ideal for an experienced backend engineer who is comfortable working in a distributed, fast-moving environment and who has a strong track record designing, building, and operating production-grade microservices using the Java ecosystem. You will be part of an agile team responsible for delivering resilient, observable services that support business-critical functionality.

The engagement is remote, but candidates must be able to attend an in-person interview or pick up company equipment at one of the following locations: San Francisco; Arlington, VA; Denver, CO; or Chicago. The contract duration and start date will be discussed with qualified candidates during the hiring process. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a high-impact program where rapid onboarding and hands-on execution are valued.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Design, develop and maintain Java-based microservices using frameworks such as Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
  • Implement well-defined RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, gRPC endpoints to support downstream services and client applications.
  • Write clean, testable, and maintainable code with emphasis on modularity and scalability.
  • Participate in solution design sessions to translate functional requirements into technical designs.

Testing, Quality & Security

  • Create and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Adopt and promote secure coding practices; implement authentication/authorization patterns (e.g., OAuth2, JWT) where required.
  • Perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers to raise overall code quality.

Deployment & Operations

  • Package services in containers (Docker) and work with platform/DevOps teams to deploy and manage services in container orchestration platforms.
  • Collaborate on CI/CD pipelines to automate builds, tests, and deployments using industry-standard tools.
  • Instrument services for monitoring and observability (metrics, logging, tracing) and participate in incident response and post-incident reviews.

Collaboration & Process

  • Work closely with product owners, QA, UX, and other engineers in an Agile/Scrum environment to deliver iterative improvements.
  • Estimate development tasks, communicate progress and risks, and contribute to sprint planning and retrospectives.
  • Document APIs, service contracts, and operational runbooks to ensure knowledge transfer and on-call readiness.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience developing backend services in Java.
  • Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and related Spring ecosystem projects (Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security).
  • Proven experience building and operating microservices architectures and designing RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with container technologies (Docker) and basic knowledge of container orchestration.
  • Experience with source control (Git) and CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of testing practices (unit, integration, mocking) and automated test frameworks.
  • Practical experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and at least one NoSQL store (e.g., Redis, MongoDB) or message broker.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional team and to attend in-person interview/equipment pickup at one of the specified U.S. locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Kubernetes and associated tooling (Helm, kustomize) for deployment and service management.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and cloud-native patterns (managed databases, IAM, serverless where applicable).
  • Knowledge of observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK, Jaeger/OpenTelemetry) and production monitoring best practices.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SNS/SQS).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) and automated security scanning tools.
  • Prior contract/temporary engagement experience and comfort with rapid onboarding.
  • Strong communication skills and experience mentoring or leading small engineering efforts.

Additional Information

This engagement is a temporary contract; specific term and compensation will be shared during the hiring process. Candidates must be available for interviews and/or equipment pickup in one of the listed cities: San Francisco; Arlington, VA; Denver, CO; or Chicago. The role typically follows U.S. business hours and will require collaboration across time zones as needed.

Applicants should be prepared to provide work samples or code examples, participate in technical interviews, and may be asked to complete a short technical exercise. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of any required onboarding checks as determined by the client.

Why Join This Role?

Joining this project gives you the opportunity to work on a technically challenging microservices platform using modern Java tooling and cloud-native practices. You’ll collaborate with experienced engineers and product teams, influence architecture decisions, and see your work operate in production quickly thanks to an accelerated delivery environment. The remote nature of the role provides flexibility, while the requirement to connect in person for onboarding ensures you’ll have the tools and support to be productive from day one.

If you are a pragmatic, quality-focused Java developer who enjoys building scalable services and working in a collaborative, results-driven environment, we encourage you to apply. Scadea will connect qualified candidates with the client for next steps in the selection process.
